Response to what others think of evil

September 14, 2006

Julia writes….

“Evil means something different to everyone. To me is it going against morals that are set in society and held in ones self.”

I agree with Julia’s statement because evil does mean something different to everyone. There are many ways of interpreting evil in which depends on what level you see it as. As she states for example, a bully at a school is not as severe as a physco killer who is roaming the streets. Although there are many people that think that a bully and a physco killer are doing the same harm and fall into the same catergory.

I also agree with Julia over what she thinks evil is because, evil is “going against morals that are set in the society.” For the reason that everyone knows what is the right thing to do and what is the wrong thing. It is up to the person to choose whether or not they want to play by the rules or be a rebel and go against them.

Who I agree with ((HW))

I agree with Kanan Makiya the most among all the other people listed in Faith and Doubt at Ground Zero. Kanan Makiya’s perspective about evil stood out the most. He states that, “Evil is something that, when you see it, when you know it, it’s intimate.” This statement has a great meaning because it refers to evil as something intimate. That can be sensed but not put into words.

In Faith and Doubt at Ground Zero, Kanan Makiya also states that,

“Suggesting evil is human doesn’t mean we can always understand it, or doesn’t mean there’s only one way of understanding it. It’s sort of like a great work of art.”

This quote states that there are many distinctions that can be made upon if something is evil or not. For example the hijackers from the plane that crashed on September 11th. This event was seen by Americans as a form a evil. Although on the other hand, the Muslim people saw it as some people performing tradition and dying for a good cause. Whether this event was an example of evil shadowing the United States is still controversial because, there are many way of interpreting it and defending your opinion.

What is evil???

September 9, 2006

The definition of evil is a something that is believed to be feared. Evil is something that is used even on little kids to regulate them and make them fear it form the beginning. For example, the whole idea about the boogie man who watches over kids at night to make sure they are not doing anything that they are not supposed to be doing. Evil is also defined as a temptation of something that is wrong. Many people such as puritans believe that doing something that you know very well is wrong is a work of the devil controlling you. As a member of the Christian religion I have learned about the story of Adam and Eve. This story very well explains how temptation can over power what you want to do verses what you should not be doing. This story is about a young man and women who go by the names of Adam and Eve. These two people were free to do whatever they wanted as long as they ignored eating the apples of a certain tree. However, just like any human they were tempted to take a bite of the harmless fruit. The bite they had of the harmless fruit was a clear taste of evil controlling them. This story is very famous in the Christian religion because, it shows how something can appear so harmless but can evil.
